President's Message

Hard to believe the summer is over and my youngest child just started college. He was in third grade when I joined CSI. 

I am very excited about our fall schedule of programs starting with The University of Tennessee Health Science Center Interprofessional Simulation Center presented by Brett Ragsdale and Jason Jackson of brg3s Architects in August. The Simulation Program is committed to fostering education, research and professional development with a focus on enhanced clinical skills and patient safety through the use of simulation. Our September program will be presented by Jeff Haltom of Haltom Engineering. Jeff will discuss Engineering at Shelby Farms Park Using Geothermal Heat Recovery. These are two amazing local projects that showcase how Memphis is a dynamic city focused on education, growth and community.

September is also the month for the CSI Annual Convention and CONSTRUCT 2017 in Providence, Rhode Island. This is an opportunity for CSI members to meet face-to-face with other members and industry professionals in a world that is increasingly virtual. The CSI Memphis Chapter will have four members attending, including Jeffrey Parnell, Mike Zielinski, Susan Evans and myself. We are looking forward this wonderful opportunity for education and networking.

We have a dedicated group of volunteers Chairing many of our Chapter committees, but they would love to have additional help and support. By getting involved at the committee or board level, CSI Memphis members not only help our organization to thrive and grow, they also develop friendships, network, and get the most possible out of their CSI membership.  

Our Scholarship Committee needs you to help spread the work about the 2018-2019 Dempsie B. Morrison Scholarship Campaign. The money collected by the CSI Memphis chapter is matched by the University of Memphis in order for two Architecture students to receive full tuition for the academic year. This year we have an exciting incentive to donate. Michael Cardone has donated two University of Memphis season football tickets to help raise money for the Scholarship Fund. Donate now at the Silver level or above to be entered in a drawing to win these tickets. Go Tigers Go!!

President's Message

I am looking forward to serving as your CSI Memphis Chapter President in 2017-2018. I have been a member of CSI for 10 years, which is the number of years I have been in the industry. My family has owned Farrell-Calhoun Paint since 1974, but I took my time raising a family before joining the family business as an Architectural Representative. At my first chapter meeting, I reconnected with Jack Moran who was a long-time family friend. Jack invited me to help him on the Scholarship Committee and I have been Co-Chair/Chair ever since. I am humbled and honored to be the fourth female President and I hope that I can follow their example and have an effective and productive term.

Through CSI, I have come to know and become friends with so many people in our industry. I hope to continue the CSI tradition of providing networking and education opportunities at our monthly Chapter meetings. We will continue to meet at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn on the second Thursday of the month. I have definitely seen new faces at these meetings and I want to increase our membership this year. We are working on scheduling a number of CEU credited programs that will showcase local projects and unique products. I believe that if we provide excellent educational opportunities, we open the door to recruit new members and show them why participating in CSI is valuable to members of our industry. 

We began this fiscal year in July, shortly after our annual Award Banquet. I will do my best to follow Hans Faulhaber who effectively lead our chapter for the last two years. I am thrilled that Hans has volunteered to help organize and teach CDT preparation classes this year. I am also excited to have Jeffrey Parnell as our President Elect and Build/It Committee Chair. Jeffrey did an outstanding job planning our 2017 Products Display Show and GSR conference. He has already started planning Build/It 2018 and I am predicting another successful show!

Kate Haywood has been working on and recently launched the 2018-2019 Dempsie B. Morrison Campaign. We decided to kick off the campaign earlier this year because Michael Cardone generously donated two University of Memphis season football tickets to help raise contributions. All donations made at the Silver Level or above will be entered in the drawing. The first drawing will be held at the August 10th Chapter meeting and the second at our October 12th Chapter meeting.

I am thankful to everyone who has helped and encouraged me in my new role. I will continue to look to our amazing Past Presidents for guidance, and I am open to any suggestions or recommendations that will help our Chapter grow and thrive.

President's Message

Greetings Memphis Chapter CSI!!  

This is my last President’s Message! My term comes to an end with the Transfer of Power meeting to be held in July when Julie Fleming will be installed as your new chapter President. I have so many people to thank for making my term easier than it would have been without their guidance, encouragement and wisdom. Of those many people I would like to specifically mention Mike Zielinski, Past President, for his help with everything related to being the President of this chapter. Mike has been an invaluable asset and resource to me both as a CSI mentor and as a friend. Jim Neison who probably has the most comprehensive understanding and historical knowledge of our chapter-also an invaluable asset and resource to me and the Board as well as a friend. And then there is Jeffrey Parnell, an emerging professional architect. Jeffrey is a relatively new member to our chapter but has determined to make a difference. If you attended either or both the BuildIt2017 products display show or the Gulf States Region Conference you experienced what Jeffrey has to offer. While he had a committee of volunteers assisting him (Mike Zielinski, Susan Evans and Julie Fleming), he was the chairman and made many of the critical decisions that caused both of those events to be a success. BuildIt2017 earned more dollars than any show in a long time which is good because most of those funds find their way to the Dempsey B. Morrison Scholarship Fund. If you have visited the website (csimemphis.org) you experienced Jeffrey’s ability at website creation.  Finally I’d like to recognize Pam Davidson for assisting in the update of the database and encouraging Allen and Hoshall to allow for our Board meetings to be held in their conference room. My post Presidential duties will shift to being the Past President where I will serve as an advisor to Julie Fleming and chairman of the Planning Committee. I will also be contributing articles of interest to the Memphis PerSPECtive from time to time.

Our chapter meeting last month featured Brian Bullard with UrbanArch who presented his excellent renovation of the Winchester (Scimitar) Building into the Hotel Napoleon. What a great presentation and project that was. If you did not attend you really missed a great presentation on a great project!!

Once again I thank you for the opportunity to serve the chapter in this honorable position. I am humbled by the history of this chapter and its membership, past and present and hope my term has been effective, productive and meaningful term.

Greetings Memphis Chapter CSI!!

BUILDIT/2017 was our meeting event for April.  Very large kudos go out to Jeffrey Parnell, Mike Zielinski, Julie Fleming and Susan Evans.  They were the committee I appointed to plan and execute the BuildIt products show and the Gulf States Region Conference.  The BuildIt show was undoubtedly taken to a higher level. The venue, the Columns, was without a doubt the most elegant space CSI Memphis has ever held the products show.  The keynote speaker was Marlon Blackwell, FAIA who I had the pleasure of having lunch with prior to his presentation.  His presentation featured many of his works including those he designed for Shelby Farms.  If you haven’t been to Shelby Farms to experience his work first hand I recommend that you visit.

The Gulf States Region Conference was held at the Springhill Suites and in the adjacent historic Kress Building.  In fact most of the events, with the exception of the Awards Banquet, took place in the Kress Building. The conference was well attended having opportunities for continuing education, board level region business and networking.  In particular I was excited to see my old pal Louis Medcalf, FCSI who attended and taught a class on Multiple Work Packages.  We also had some time to play music-you will recall we had a band called Critical Path…but I digress.  The Conference was as successful as the BuildIt show so you can imagine my elation that BOTH events went off splendidly!! A very special thank you to those who attended, participated and volunteered to make these events happen is such a successful way!

This month we are publishing the article What Architects Can Learn from The Beatles written by Bill Schmalz, CSI, CCCA, FAIA who is a principal with Perkins and Will in Los Angeles.  While not your typical technically related I think you will find it an enjoyable read.

This month’s chapter meeting features Brian Bullard, AIA with UrbanArch who will present the Renovation of the Winchester (Scimitar) Building into the Hotel Napoleon.  This was an excellent renovation of a historic downtown property.  Let me encourage you to attend!!

Greetings Gulf States CSI Members!! 

Welcome to Memphis Gulf States Region members! The Memphis Chapter is proud to host the Region Conference and look forward to having a successful and productive meeting. If you arrive on Thursday be sure to attend our BUILD/IT2017 products show at the Columns- a short walk from the host hotel. The Keynote speaker for that event will be Marlon Blackwell a noted architect hailing from Arkansas.

Our Gulf States Region Conference will be held at the Springhill Suites Downtown. We have a full agenda with continuing education and leadership development opportunities. This will also be a time to reconnect with other professionals in our region.  Welcome to the home of Rock and Roll!!

I want to encourage everyone to participate in our major events this month.  Memphis hosts the Gulf States Region Conference about once every 15 years so this is an opportunity for those of you who reside in this locale to attend a region conference on the cheap. It is also an opportunity to connect with or reconnect with professionals in our region. And I want to encourage you to attend BUILDIT2017.  We host a products show every year where vendors display and provide information on their products and services.  The Vendors make a concerted effort and investment to participate.  It’s a free event so you should make a concerted effort too! I hope to see you there!!

Greetings Memphis Chapter CSI!! 

Our program last month featured Kurt Hansen (Hilti) who presented his excellent program on Firestopping 101- New Developments in Fire Stopping. This month we will feature Joe Lincourt (Advanced Building Products), who will present his program, Designing and Detailing Exterior Walls for Moisture Control. This program will be a relatively technically oriented presentation that will provide information for the design professional, material supplier, general contractor and sub-contractor alike. Please plan to attend and bring along a friend.

Our GSR Conference to be held in April (21 &22) at the Springhill Suites Downtown is coming along well.  Our very own Jeffrey Parnell has been heading up the planning effort for this event and our products display show- BUILD/IT 2017 (April 20) and is to be commended indeed. There will be continuing education opportunities available too.  Please see Jeffrey’s editorial later in this edition for details.

This month we are publishing my article on Contract Closeout.  This article focuses on what effective construction administration is related to construction contract closeout defining what activities should take place to ensure a successfully closed out project. This article provides further insight on how we administer contracts in the construction industry.

Greetings Memphis Chapter CSI!!
  
We have real news here: the time and place for our chapter meetings has been changed.  The Board deliberated and determined to change from a plated dinner meeting to a buffet lunch meeting starting at 11:30am.  The venue has changed to the Holiday Inn on the University of Memphis campus.  The location is more central to our membership and having a lunch meeting instead of a dinner meeting should translate into more members and guests attending.  Oh, one more thing:  the cost of the meal has DECREASED by $5.00 to $20 for members.
 
We have had some Board changes over the past few months. Richard Hill’s work schedule has caused him to decline the position of President. Our very own Julie Fleming has stepped up and will become the next President of our chapter!! Way to go Julie!! Richard will maintain a seat on the board and in fact will replace Julie’s Board position.  Gary White has agreed to take Ken Hudson’s Secretary position also due to Ken’s work schedule. We should have a succession plan for the next couple of years which is really good news for the chapter.
 
This month’s meeting program is by Kent Kile with PPG on the colors of Frank Lloyd Wright. I’ve actually seen this presentation before and is why I asked Kent to present it to our chapter.  I found it very interesting and informative and I am sure you will too.

We are currently in the planning stages for the Gulf States Region Conference to be held right here in lovely Memphis next April.  Our very own Jeffrey Parnell is heading up this effort and doing a fine job.    In upcoming issues we will provide the schedule, the speaker’s bios, and the classes that will be available for continuing education.  So be on the lookout for what’s coming!

BUILD/IT and Gulf States Region Conference Update

Greetings CSI Memphis!

For 2017, I have volunteered to take up the heavy burden of planning the 2017 BUILD/IT Products Display Show from Scott Guidry.  I am very excited to take on this task and I am fully aware of its importance.  The 2017 show is made more important by the Gulf States Region Conference.  Thankfully, I will not be taking on this task alone.  Our current Past President, Mike Zielinski, has volunteered to assist me in the major planning efforts and we have formed a committee consisting of Hans Faulhaber, Julie Fleming, Susan Evans, and Ben Avant.  We are confident that we will have a successful event.

This year’s BUILD/IT show will take place at the Columns of One Commerce Square on Thursday, April 20, 2017.  The CSI Gulf States Region Conference will continue through Saturday, April 22 at Springhill Suites in Court Square.  We’ve booked an excellent keynote speaker for BUILD/IT and have several other great events lined up for the weekend.  I encourage you all to go to click the logo above to go the BUILD/IT Page to learn more about the speakers and venues.

As you are all aware, the annual products display show benefits the Dempsie B. Morrison Scholarship Fund.  In 2017, we plan on filling fifty vendor booths at BUILD/IT and we have a lofty sponsorship goal.  I would like to encourage our membership to help us pursue these goals.  Encourage your company to become a vendor or a sponsor.  We have created a wide range of sponsorship levels starting at $250 and we hope that the increased audience of the Gulf States Region will encourage businesses of all sizes to participate.  So far, we have eighteen reserved booths, a handful of sponsors, and several verbal commitments.  I would be extremely happy if we reserve all fifty booths by the end of January.

CONSTRUCT Show 2016

The 2016 CONSTRUCT Show in Austin, Texas was absolutely amazing.  I went to Austin with an agenda: Learn how CSI Memphis can improve and boost its membership, specifically with young professionals; promote the 2017 CSI Memphis BUILD/IT Show and Gulf States Region Conference; learn more about the exciting and ground breaking technologies like virtual and augmented reality devices; and most importantly to network and have fun.
Those of you who know me well are aware that I am a passionate advocate for the advancement of emerging professionals and promoting licensure for aspiring architects.  Anyone reading this probably knows that CSI, as a whole, is struggling with membership. This fact is especially true with the Millennial generation and I want to change that.  I did however, meet a group of great Young Professionals in Austin and had a fantastic time spending time and getting to know them.  What was great about the entire thing was that they came from the four corners of the continent and all worked in different parts of the industry.  Some of the Young Professionals I met included: a specifier and an blogger who both hailed from Portland, general contractors from Little Rock and Dallas, two product representatives from Canada, and two aspiring architect from Charlotte and Austin.  During the three days we spent together we discussed the professionals we work in, what we want to do in the future, the value we see in our CSI memberships, and how we think CSI can boost the number of Young Professionals in CSI. One thing we agreed on is that the CSI experience begins in school, is sustained by support of the chapter after graduation, and blossoms into involvement and volunteerism when the Young Professional begins to find his or her place in the industry.  Subsequently, I believe we need to continue to promote the Dempsie B. Morrison Scholarship Fund and our student chapter, begin sponsor memberships after the students graduate, and encourage Young Professionals to join committees and get involved once they feel comfortable in their professions.
Speaking of the Dempsie B. Morrison Scholarship, one of my main goals was to promote the 2017 CSI Memphis BUILD/IT Show and Gulf States Region Conference.  These events will be the biggest fundraising efforts for the scholarship fund of the year.  CSI Memphis Past President Mike Zielinski and I are heading up the planning committee for these events.  The CONSTRUCT Show floor, regional caucus, and social events gave me an excellent opportunity to promote our annual products show and GSR conference.  I have a stack of business cards covered in notes sitting on my desk and I plan on following up on each and every lead I can to insure the success of our chapter.  BUILD/IT 2017 will kick off the event on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at the Columns of One Commerce Square in Downtown Memphis.  The Gulf States Regional Conference will continue through Saturday, April 22 at the Kress Building at Springhill Suites in Court Square.  We have some excellent events planned including a Keynote Presentation by Marlon Blackwell, the architect behind the Heart of Shelby Farms Park and presentation from Memphis Historian Jimmy Ogle.  We have recently released our sponsor package and are looking to fill fifty booths.  By the time this article is published, we will have already have sold five booths for the products display show and acquired two sponsors for the weekend.  I have no doubt that our membership knows the importance of this event and how it will impact the scholarship fund.  Please go to our recently-updated and redesigned website, download and print the sponsor packet, and help us pursue sponsors and sell booths; like, share, and comment on the CSI Memphis Facebook page; do whatever you can do to promote BUILD/IT and the GSR Conference.  A big push from our members will help tremendously.
I hope to bring in some sort of speaker, sponsor, or vendor that will promote and demonstrate some of the outstanding and groundbreaking technology coming around the bend to the regional conference.  I was fortunate to attend two great presentations that focused on cutting-edge technology at the national conference in Austin.  I learned about a variety of technologies including augmented and virtual reality hardware, 3D printing, drones and UAVs, photogrammetry, laser scanning, wearable devices that enhance human strength and safety, and much more.  These kinds of systems will be common place in the design, engineering, and construction industries within the next five years and I firmly believe that learning how to operate and leverage services and profits from new software and hardware will set the outstanding professionals apart from the pedestrian.  If any of our membership can help bring in a presenter on 3D printing or a vendor that will provide a virtual reality demonstration for BUILD/IT or the GSR, please get in touch with chapter leadership, because we would love to have them.
Overall, CONSTRUCT was an amazing experience and I wouldn’t trade what I learned or the connections I made there for almost anything.  Austin was an absolutely beautiful and welcoming city that definitely keeps things weird.  Maybe it was the weirdness of Austin or the energy of the national convention, but I came back to Memphis with a mission and I have never been more optimistic about the future of our chapter.  I would like to close by adding to our Chapter President’s monthly plea: please donate to the Dempsie B Morrison Scholarship Fund.  If you find it difficult to donate financially, please donate your time.  The chapter board is working diligently to plan a fantastic weekend in April of 2017, but we could always use more help.  Sweat equity is just as welcome as financial giving.

Is it me or is time really flying? We are in the 10th month of this year already! At least the weather seems to have broken with milder temperatures.

This month’s meeting program is by Tommy Smith and Carl Drennon. These are two of the most experienced guys in our chapter.  They are presenting their program titled: The Manufacturer’s Role in Code Compliance.  I am sure this will be a lively and informative discussion.  Please be sure to attend and bring a friend or colleague!!

Greetings Memphis Chapter CSI!!  

It seems like only yesterday I was returning from a great CSI convention in St. Louis. I am now preparing to go to another convention, this year in Austin, Texas, a town that prides itself on being weird. I am looking forward to the fellowship, the educational opportunities and meeting new folks in our industry. I will be there with our very own Jeffrey Parnell. We will both provide reports upon our return-look forward to them!

This month’s meeting program is by Michelle Ashbery, CDT, LEED AP, a familiar face to be sure. Her program last year was on acoustics, a subject near and dear to my heart. This year she will present her program: Understanding Code Compliant Integrated Ceiling Solutions. Unfortunately for me I will be in Austin during this gathering but hope to hear from an attending member on how good it was.

We have added a new feature in the magazine for your reading pleasure: What I Learned I hope will be a new feature that will be authored by a member who attended the meeting and, of course, was willing to write a quick report on what they learned. Look forward to future reports. Our first is by Susan Evans, CSI.

President's Message

We begin a new fiscal year this month which means we also have new leadership-new executive leaders and new board members. We will publish the new make up in this issue. I will be your President for another term and look forward to the opportunities and challenges that being your President will present. My “thank you” at the end of this message is from the heart- I truly thank the membership for the confidence you have in me to lead this very worthy organization.

Our Awards Banquet at the Butcher Shop was well attended.  The food and beverage was outstanding and the fellowship amongst our membership was on display. I will publish the list of award winners and those who were recognized for their contributions above and beyond being a member in this issue. 

I want to encourage everyone who reads this-member or not- to contribute to the Dempsie B. Morrison Scholarship Fund.  This is a tax deductible contribution to the extent allowed by law. I encourage you to make a donation to this very worthy scholarship fund.  CSI Memphis in partnership with the University of Memphis provides two scholarships that fully fund the tuition for the two selected students for one year.  This can eliminate a financial hardship that might exist and in turn provide peace of mind to the student allowing them to focus on their studies and not fund raising activities. I knew Mr. Morrison and had him as a drafting teacher while attending State Technical Institute at Memphis-now SWTCC. Please consider a donation to this very worthy endeavor. If I can donate to this very worthy fund…so can you!

We have our Board meetings the Monday prior to our chapter meetings that are currently scheduled for the second Thursday evening of the month. The general membership is invited to attend the Board meetings should they have business to bring before the Board or simply want to see how the Board functions. If you have an agenda item-let me know by email the Friday prior to the meeting and I will place it on the agenda.

Once again I thank you for the opportunity to serve the chapter in this honorable position.  I am humbled by the history of this chapter and its membership, past and present and hope to have an effective, productive and meaningful term.  My phone is always open so if you have questions, comments, recommendations or simply suggestions give me a call.  I’ll see you at our next meeting!
